Teens Drawing from the Dialysis Chair

Boredom was briefly banished when we traveled to Little Rock’s Arkansas Children’s Hospital to make art with teens undergoing dialysis treatment. We spent a total of 12 hours over 8 days with three teens who made art and poetry while hooked by tubes to dialysis machines. Within the following two weeks we produced an art catalogue and coordinated a private in-hospital art exhibition that brought together the teens, their families and their medical team. (We also conducted Bodyscapes workshops for the hospital’s Child Life nursing staff.)

“I thought I had an idea of what these teenagers were going through, but this was the first time I truly saw what they felt like living with dialysis. It is a very restricted life. Bodyscapes allowed them to be normal. I saw freedom in their artwork. This show was so loving.”
